However much you love what you do for a living, there’ll come a point when you realise that all the time you’re selling your time for money, there’s a ceiling on your potential income. Discover what you can do to turn this situation around…
As my beloved Grandfather used to say, there’s a limit to how much money you can earn but no limit to how much you can make! While there are a number of ways to augment your earnings – whether it’s through stocks & shares, property or employing other people – the easiest and most cost effective way is to “productise” your services.
When you start to make products (especially information products) based on what you “do”, you’re in the enviable position of creating something once – and then selling it over and over again. Think of the plethora of fitness videos!
When you create a product of your own, you neatly establish yourself as an expert which means that not only do you stand out from the crowd – but you also have a tool which can come in very handy with the media. For example, I’ve made several guided visualisation CDs which have been featured in a couple of national magazines as a special offer to 10 lucky readers! The extra publicity (which would have cost thousands if I’d paid for the same amount of space at full advertising rates) neatly pulled in some sales that I’d never have made otherwise.
And the really exciting thing is that as well as offering your products for sale to your existing customers, if they’re good enough, they can also become part of a value added package you offer to new clients. The trick though, is to make sure that you only offer what somebody would be willing to buy – this isn’t an opportunity to shift out-of-date “tat” that you haven’t been able sell!
Finally, if you do talks and seminars – and you really should be doing so as part of your personal promotion programme – then having your products for sale at the back of the room not only raises your profile and credibility but they can also bring in extra money from the gig…
