Orchestrated by criminals posing as HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), the fraudulent e-mails are being sent to a variety of businesses in the UK.
Appearing to have been seent from HMRC, the emails ask the recipient to supply financial information - including their bank account number.
The most important thing to remember is that no reputable company or organisation ever requests sensitive information via an e-mail. This is true whether you are talking about personal e-mails or those sent to a company.
Many individuals become victims of crime every year when they reply to bogus e-mails apparently sent from their bank, and this is working on the same lines.
These latest cons claim to be from fake the Inland Revenue Board, the Inland Revenue Customs Board and Inland Revenue Tax Clearance.
But watch out - these departments are all FAKE and do not even exist!
If you do receive any e-mails claiming to be from the Revenue which you find at all suspicious, contact your accountant who will be able to advise you of any legitimate HMRC activity.
You may also want to consider investing in some anti-spam e-mail software which can help filter out this sort of e-mail.”
